5 Types Of Dental Implants

Dentist Blog

If you have missing teeth, you're not alone. Many Americans have at least one missing tooth, but you don't have to turn to dentures or dental bridges anymore. Dental implants are a great option to replace one or all of your teeth. if you would like to know more, read more below about the types of dental implants.

1. Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are more common and popular because of their many benefits. They look like a screw, and the dentist drills the implant into the jawbone. The titanium implant fuses to the bone in the jaw to create a strong hold that also stimulates the jawbone to keep it strong. Once healed, the dentist adds a porcelain crown.

2. Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are less common because they aren't as durable. The dentist inserts subperiosteal implants below the gum tissue but above the jawbone tissue. This makes it a better choice if your jawbone is weak, and you can't afford/don't want a bone graft. They are also usually more affordable than endosteal implants.

3. Single Dental Implant

A single dental implant consists of one implant and one crown, making it a great option to replace a single missing tooth or a handful of missing teeth scattered in the mouth. You can clean your single dental implant like a natural tooth, including flossing on either side of the implant. While the dental crown and titanium implant are resistant to decay, you can experience peri-implantitis if you neglect your oral health.

4. Implant-Supported Bridge

If you're missing multiple teeth in a row, ask about an implant-supported bridge. Implant-supported bridges use fewer implants than crowns, making them more cost-effective than multiple single implants. They are fixed prosthetics like single dental implants, but you'll need special floss or floss threaders to clean under the bridge. As with a traditional bridge, plaque and debris can get trapped, which may lead to gum disease and peri-implantitis.

5. Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures, as the name suggests, replace traditional dentures. You can get a full set or just an upper or lower plate, but the dentures replace an entire row of teeth. The actual titanium implants are fixed in place inside the jawbone. However, the dentures are removable, but you can attach them to the implants, making them more stable and secure than traditional dentures. Removing the dentures makes it easy to clean the gums to prevent gum complications.

Dental implants are a great option for anyone with missing teeth. Even if you don't want the hassle of a bone graft, there is an implant option for you. If you would like to know more, contact a dentist in your area today.
